The Ark
Short film premieres April 13th, 2021 – Tickets available here!
ABOUT THE FILM
Responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Ark is a hybrid documentary short that weaves together experimental video diaries and lyrical performance to reflect on longing, loss, and the ways we cope with isolation. This collection of video diaries assembles works of professional and novice artists in response to Shared Process, a series of filmmaking prompts generated between April-June 2020. Through these intimate portraits and the filmmakers’ poetic engagement with the myth of The Great Flood, the film examines the magnitude of our collective grief and asks “On the other side of this, who will we become?”
THE MAKING OF THE ARK
In March 2020, when New York City was ordered to shelter in place for the first time in our lifetimes, our art collective, Well of Wills, began to offer a weekly, low-stakes creative project – free and accessible to anyone with email. Each week, we sent out a creative prompt and a microfilm-making lesson taught by a different filmmaker or interdisciplinary artist. We also hosted weekly zoom conversations for the artists and participants to connect and answer questions related to the theme of that week.
The Ark collages a selection of these video diaries with lyrical performance and poetry to create an experimental video time capsule that reflects the turbulence and resilience of this time.
